Tooth Implant Recovery Time for Each Stage of the Procedure
While dental implants involve relatively simple surgeries, the entire procedure is a multi-step process that requires significant healing time between each stage.
Embedding the Post
The first part of the procedure involves embedding a small titanium post into the jawbone. Your dentist makes a small incision in the gum tissue, drills into the bone, and places the post.
Most patients must wait 4-8 weeks for the titanium dental implants to fuse with the jawbone and surrounding tissue through a process called osseointegration. This process creates a stable foundation for the abutment and crown and enables your dental implants to function like natural teeth.
Attaching the Abutment
An abutment is the part of the implant that connects the titanium post to the dental crown. This surgery re exposes your dental implants to place the abutment. After placement, the gum tissue around the dental implants needs to heal, which can take around 4-6 weeks.
In some cases, the abutment can be attached at the same time your dental implants.
Fitting The Crown
The final step to getting your dental implants is fitting the artificial crown. The crown is the visible part of your tooth and is typically fabricated from porcelain or zirconia, which is matched to the colour of your other teeth, so it blends seamlessly.
The dentist cements the crown in place and performs some minor adjustments to ensure your bite is aligned. You are then ready to enjoy your new dental implants.
What If I Need Additional Surgeries?
For some patients, their jawbone on the upper or lower arches is not thick or dense enough to support dental implants. In these cases, your dentist may recommend a bone graft or a sinus lift to add extra bone tissue. Your jaw bone will be assessed during your initial free consultation.
If you require additional surgery, this adds extra time to your total tooth implant recovery time.
