That dull, throbbing ache at the very back of your mouth has a way of taking over your whole day. For a lot of people in dubbo, it turns up in their late teens or early twenties, right when wisdom teeth start pushing through. The good news is that gum pain around wisdom teeth is usually manageable, and in most cases, there is a clear reason behind it.
Here is what tends to cause it, what you can do at home, and when it is worth booking in with your dentist.
Why Wisdom Teeth Make Your Gums Sore

Wisdom teeth are the last molars to arrive, and by the time they do, there is often not much room left for them. When a tooth can only partly break through, a small flap of gum tissue ends up sitting over part of it. Food and bacteria slip underneath that flap and become tricky to clean out, which leads to redness, swelling, and tenderness.
Sometimes the tooth comes through at an angle and presses against the molar in front of it, and that added pressure can make the whole area ache.

This very common problem has a name: pericoronitis, which simply means inflammation of the gum around a partly erupted tooth.
It is one of the more frequent causes of back-of-mouth pain we see at our Dubbo clinic, and after more than 20 years caring for Central West families, we find it settles well when it is caught early.
Signs Worth Paying Attention To
Gum pain around a wisdom tooth rarely shows up on its own. You might also notice:
- Red, puffy, or tender gums at the back of your jaw
- A bad taste or bad breath that will not shift
- Swelling near your cheek or jawline
- Difficulty opening your mouth fully
- A sore jaw or tenderness when you bite down
For a lot of people, the soreness flares up most while eating or brushing, then settles for a while before returning. The patients who come in when they first notice that pattern almost always have an easier time of it than those who wait and hope it fades on its own.
Simple Ways to Ease the Discomfort
While you wait for an appointment, a few gentle steps can take the edge off:
- Rinse with warm salt water a few times a day to calm the gum and wash away trapped debris
- Keep the area clean with soft, careful brushing, even if it feels sore
- Use a cold compress against your cheek to settle swelling
- Try an over-the-counter pain reliever, and have a quick chat with your pharmacist if you are unsure what suits you
- Stick to soft foods, so you are not pressing on the sore spot
These steps manage the symptoms, but they do not fix what is going on underneath. If the gum keeps flaring up, ongoing professional gum care is the more reliable path to lasting relief.
When to See Your Dubbo Dentist
Some signs mean it is time to stop self-treating and get checked. Book in promptly if you have:
- Pain that lasts more than two or three days
- Swelling that is spreading across your face or jaw
- A fever, or trouble swallowing or opening your mouth
These can point to an infection that needs hands-on treatment. We would always rather take a quick look and put your mind at ease than have you sit at home unsure. A simple X-ray shows us exactly how the wisdom tooth is sitting, and from there, we can talk you through your options.
How We Treat It

The right approach depends on what we find. In many cases, a thorough cleaning around the tooth clears the trapped bacteria and brings quick relief. If there is an infection, we may settle that first. Where a gum flap keeps catching food, reshaping or removing that tissue can help. And if the tooth is impacted or the trouble keeps coming back, removal is sometimes the sensible long-term answer.
“Every mouth is different, so the plan we suggest is built around your situation, not a one-size-fits-all fix.”
You do not have to push through the ache and hope it passes. Wisdom teeth do not always need removing, and plenty of people keep theirs with no trouble at all. The aim is simply to find what is causing your pain and deal with it before it turns into something bigger.
