Why do teeth discolour?
How do I get my teeth whitened?
Clean and scale
It is always best to arrange a clean and scale with the dentist before having teeth whitening treatment since this produces the best results.
Consultation
Like all our cosmetic services, we will ask you to attend a brief consultation before teeth whitening can go ahead. This enables us to carry out an oral examination to check that you have a healthy mouth. Should you have signs of gum disease or a tooth that needs filling, we will need to address those issues first.
When whitening isn’t an option
Most stains are on the surface of the tooth enamel and can be easily removed by bleaching. However, deeper stains, known as intrinsic stains, often fail to respond to treatment and it may be that an alternative such as dental veneers or crowns is a better option.
What types of teeth whitening do you offer?
We provide two options – in-chair whitening and take-home whitening kits – using top name brands such as Zoom, Pola-office and Opalescence.
Our dentists will be happy to talk you through each product and help you decide which is best for you.
So, how do they work?
In-chair whitening
This procedure is carried out chairside in our clinic and can provide instant results. Before treatment starts, a rubber shield will be used to protect your gums. Bleaching gel is carefully applied to your teeth. The gel is then rinsed off after a short period of time, the degree of whiteness checked and, the gel is reapplied until the level of whiteness is reached.
Most bleaching gels contain hydrogen peroxide which reacts chemically with oxygen to break down stains and lighten the teeth. Depending on the brand, sometimes a laser light is used to activate the whitening process.
In many cases, several shades lighter can be achieved, with visible results in less than one hour – making it a perfect lunch-break treatment!
Take-home teeth whitening kits
Once your trays are received, you will be given instructions on how to fill them and how long to wear them for. The trays are worn over your teeth and, depending on the brand, can be worn for a short interval during the day or overnight while you sleep.
Results are a little slower, but you should start to see signs that your teeth are getting lighter within a few days.
