Dental Implants Patients Will Love

Are you considering dental implants? Patients should know that they are the gold standard of tooth replacement. But what are they and how do they work?

Dental Implants

What are dental implants?

A dental implant is an artificial tooth which is used to replace a missing or badly damaged tooth.

While an implant is referred to in a singular form, it is in fact made up of 3 parts. A titanium implant, an abutment, and a dental crown.

How do dental implants work?

Dental implants are the closest thing to our natural teeth and act as permanent replacements for missing teeth. Unlike conventional dentures and bridges which rely on the support of other teeth to keep them in position, implants are a stand-alone restoration. Because they are anchored directly into the jaw, they are incredibly versatile and can be used by our dentists to replace single, multiple, or even all of your teeth.

Here at Advanced Dental Care clinic in NSW, we use top quality Biohorizon implants which are a proven brand leader.

What is the procedure?

Placing the implant
The implant which looks similar to a screw is surgically inserted into the jawbone and left for several weeks during which time it fuses with the existing bone. Once it has bonded with the bone, it becomes strong enough to support a dental crown.
Attaching the abutment
The next step is to perform a short surgery to attach the abutment which is used to connect the dental crown. On some occasions, the abutment can be placed at the same time as the implant.
Finishing with a dental crown

After a short recovery period, the dental crown can be fitted. This is usually made from porcelain or zirconia and will be colour matched to your existing teeth for a seamless finish. The dentist cements it in place and checks your bite before allowing you to leave our dental clinic with a beautifully restored smile.

The whole process takes somewhere between 4-9 months depending upon the individual.

Now you know all about tooth implants, patients may be wondering about the benefits. There are several:

  • Dental implants do not rely on other teeth for support or require them to be modified, as is the case with a conventional bridge.
  • Dental implants are more comfortable than dentures because they are fixed to the bone.
  • A person can eat what they want including crunchy apples and nuts.

Dental implants are not suitable for everyone and this includes family members under the age of 17, pregnant women, those with poor oral health, and those with medical conditions which can delay the healing process.
