If you have a wisdom tooth extraction booked, the first question on your mind is usually a simple one: how long until you feel normal again? It is also one of the most common things patients ask us before treatment here in dubbo. The honest answer is that healing happens in stages, not all in a single day.
Most people are back to their usual routine within a few days, while the deeper healing quietly keeps ticking along for weeks. Here is what to expect so you can plan with confidence.
The short answer
For a straightforward extraction, the worst of the swelling and soreness settles within three to five days. Your gum tissue knits closed over roughly one to two weeks, and the bone underneath continues to fill in for several weeks to a few months.
From what we see day to day, the timeline is fairly predictable once we know whether a tooth was simple or surgical to remove. You will not feel that final stage, and it does not stop you from getting on with daily life.
Your wisdom tooth healing timeline
First 24 to 48 hours.
Your body forms a protective blood clot in the socket, so looking after that clot is the main job. Expect some swelling, mild bleeding, and tenderness. Swelling usually peaks around day two, which can feel a little alarming, but it is a normal part of healing.
In our experience, the patients who guard that clot carefully in these first two days tend to have the smoothest run, so rest with your head propped up and use cold packs on your cheek in short bursts.

The swelling starts to ease,e and the gum begins closing over the site. Most patients feel well enough to return to work or study within three to five days. If your tooth was deeply impacted, or you had all four removed in one visit, give yourself a couple of extra days.

Weeks one to two. By now, the gum has largely sealed,d and any dissolvable stitches loosen and disappear on their own. Eating becomes comfortable again, though you may still favour the other side of your mouth for a little while.

Bone healing. Beneath the surface, your jawbone keeps remodelling and solidifying for several weeks to a few months. This stage is painless and silent, and you can eat and live normally throughout it.

What affects how quickly you heal
No two recoveries are identical. A simple extraction of a fully erupted tooth heals faster than a surgical removal of an impacted one, where gum and bone may need to be moved.
Younger, healthy patients tend to bounce back quicker thanks to faster tissue repair, while smoking and alcohol both slow healing and raise the risk of dry socket.
When we plan an extraction, we check the position of the roots and how close they sit to nearby nerves, because that detail often shapes how quickly the area settles afterwards. Our experienced team handles wisdom teeth removal in Dubbo with digital imaging and gentle surgical techniques, which supports a smoother, more predictable recovery.
Simple tips for a smoother recovery
These are the same steps we talk through with every patient before they head home:
- Stick to soft, cool foods like yoghurt, smoothies (with a spoon, not a straw), soup, and scrambled eggs.
- Skip straws, spitting, and smoking early on, since the suction can dislodge the clot.
- Rinse gently with warm salt water after the first 24 hours to keep the area clean.
- Take any prescribed pain relief or anti-inflammatories as directed.
- Rest up and avoid heavy lifting or vigorous exercise for several days.
When to check in with your dentist
Most recoveries run smoothly, but it pays to know the warning signs. Get in touch if you notice severe pain that medication will not settle, swelling that worsens after day three, ongoing bleeding, a fever, or a bad taste and odour that could point to dry socket or infection.
We would always rather you rang, and it turned out to be nothing, than waited on something that needed a quick look.
